3 Steps to Resilience


Such a tumultuous time, the end of year and exciting start of a new one. A busy rush of family, work … and weddings! Although a year of celebrations it has been a tricky one personally. Health has really impacted on my everyday wellbeing, and how comfortable I feel in my own skin, literally. My gut and skin have progressively become chronic illnesses.

But enough of the rant, because we’re talking about resilience! Resilience isn’t about ranting and reminiscing about better days. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. It is a necessary skill for coping with life's inevitable obstacles and one of the key ingredients to fulfilment! To be resilient you need a strong internal locus of control. Resilience is about accepting that we don’t have control over life's challenges, but realising we can control how we deal with them.

Scientists who study stress and resilience say it’s important to think of resilience as an emotional muscle that can be strengthened at any time. While it’s useful to build up resilience before a big or small crisis hits, there still are active steps you can take during and after a crisis to speed your emotional recovery. Research tells us that resilience is ultimately a set of skills that can be taught. “There is a naturally learnable set of behaviours that contribute to resilience,” said Dr. Grant.

Problem Solve with Positivity

Having an ability to smile, find joy, hope and positivity even when there is struggle can be hard when it is easy to become the victim of circumstances. However taking on a resilient mindset means perceiving a problem as an opportunity, a temporary set back and a lesson. Avoid jumping to conclusions or thinking unhelpful thoughts. Figure out solutions and strategies to the problem at hand. Calmly and rationally look at the problem and envision a successful future.

Play and Connect

Go and play with your friends and family, and I say play because I mean confide in them, but also have fun and truly connect. Surrounding yourself with positive energy will reduce your stress levels and help you focus on other pursuits. Find a hobby you and a close friend can enjoy together. Start a collage night with some gal pals or go to pottery classes with your sister. Find an outlet to express yourself whilst gain support and feedback from others.

Plan and Set Goals

Sometimes we fail, we make mistakes or life simply throws us a curveball or plain crap at us. This is not a time to be complacent, never trying anything new or runaway from risk. It is a time for us to reassess our purpose, our values and our plans. Grab a pen and paper or your bullet journal and break down how you are going to nurture yourself, how you are going to connect, how you are going to reach your goals and essentially how you are going to turn misfortune into fortune. Focus on the bright things ahead and what you have control over.

Train your resilience like you train your body to become stronger. Over time, with persistence and a positive attitude and mind, you will find your thoughts become more resilient, you think things through strategically and realistically, and you are ready to move on. xx
